Bee Jersey filly closes with a rush for first stakes victory

Bee Jersey got his newest stakes winner on Nov. 28 when Topsy surged past Canoodling in deep stretch to win the $100,000 Zia Park Distaff S. by a length.

Three-year-old Topsy, who was facing older stakes competition for the first time, has raced at eight different tracks in 2023, picking up four victories, as well as finishing second in both the Miss Preakness S. (G3) and Leslie’s Lady S. at Ellis Park.

Topsy was away alertly in Tuesday’s six-furlong dash, then allowed to settle back to fifth, about four lengths from the leaders, after a quarter-mile. She raced along the rail around the turn, then swung three-wide coming into the stretch. She quickly gathered momentum and rolled to the front to win drawing away in 1:08.59 on a fast track.

Topsy, owned by William & Corinne Heiligbrodt and Jackpot Farm, is now 4-2-0 in 10 starts and has earned $220,363. The chestnut filly was bred in Kentucky by Charles Fipke and hails from the same family as Fipke’s Grade 1-winning millionaire Perfect Soul (IRE).
